History
Used for several centuries in its native area in the Far East, the Manchurian apricot tree has long been appreciated for its exceptional hardiness. Once grown in traditional orchards in the cold regions of Manchuria and the Russian Far East, it was valued not only for its fruit, but also as a rootstock for commercial apricot trees due to its frost hardiness.
Origins
The Manchurian apricot tree (often identified by the scientific name Prunus mandshurica) is native to the cold regions of East Asia. Adapted to harsh climates, it grows naturally in varied soils, often on welldrained and slightly acidic soils. Its genetic characteristics give it a high tolerance to low temperatures, making it an interesting species for cultivation in environments with harsh winters.
Orchard Management
  • In the orchard, the Manchurian apricot tree fits perfectly into a sustainable cultivation approach:
Location: It should be planted in full sun, in a place sheltered from strong winds, in order to promote good ripening of the fruit despite the harsh winters.
Soil: Choose deep, organicrich and welldrained soil, thus avoiding waterlogging that could damage its sensitive roots.
Spacing: Spacing of about 5 to 7 m ensures good air circulation, limits competition, and facilitates cultivation and harvesting.
Physiology
  • This apricot tree is a relatively slow-growing deciduous tree:
    • Size: It usually reaches a height of between 4 and 8 m, with a wingspan that depends on local conditions.
    • Foliage: Its large, often lobed leaves unfold in summer to ensure good photosynthesis, while they take on beautiful hues before falling off in autumn.
    • Flowering: Flowering begins in spring, with small white or pink flowers that, although discreet, announce the subsequent formation of the fruit.
Tree Management
  • To obtain a vigorous and productive tree, it is essential to adopt appropriate management:
    • Training pruning: From the first years, it is advisable to form a balanced framework to promote good ventilation of the canopy and facilitate harvesting.
    • Maintenance pruning: Carried out in winter (frost free), it consists of removing dead wood and badly oriented branches, thus limiting indoor shade and stimulating production.
    • Pollination: Although some varieties may be partially self-fertile, the presence of several plants in the orchard promotes better pollination.
Fruit Quality
  • The fruits of the Manchurian apricot tree are distinguished by their robustness and characteristic flavor:
Appearance: They are usually modest to medium in size, with thin skin that passes easily when picked.
Taste: The flesh offers a balanced combination of acidity and sweetness, often described as more tart than that of classic apricot trees.
Use: These fruits can be eaten fresh or transformed into jams, compotes or other culinary preparations, enhancing their nutritional contribution in vitamins and antioxidants.
Plant Protection
  • The Manchurian apricot tree is known for its great hardiness, but some preventive measures remain important:
Monitoring: Inspect the tree regularly for leaf spots or signs of rot.
Hygiene: Removing dead leaves and damaged fruit helps limit the spread of fungal diseases.
Treatments: In case of problems, choose biological solutions (plant manure, natural fungicides) and adapt irrigation to avoid excess humidity, which could promote infections.
Harvest
  • The fruit is harvested at the end of summer or in autumn:
Ripeness: Fruits are picked when they become tender, before they begin to brown.
Method: Hand picking is recommended to avoid damage, in order to preserve their flavor and texture.
Use: Freshly harvested fruit is best eaten on the spot or is quickly transformed into jams, compotes or juices, in order to preserve its nutritional quality.
