Hidcote Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’) – Compact and Intensely Fragrant

Description

‘Hidcote’ lavender is a highly prized dwarf variety known for its compact, dense, ball-shaped growth. Its deep purple flowers are highly aromatic and contrast beautifully with its evergreen silver-gray foliage. Ideal for low hedges, flower beds, rock gardens, or containers, this lavender is as beautiful as it is useful—it attracts pollinators and fills the garden with fragrance all summer long.

Originally from England, it was selected in France by Major Lawrence Johnston in the early 20th century. Today, it remains one of the most popular lavender varieties for gardens and landscaping.

  • Prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage next year’s blooms.
  • Never cut into old wood, as lavender does not regrow well from aged stems.

🌿 Propagation:

  • Cuttings: Take semi-woody cuttings in summer and plant them in a light substrate.
  • Seeds: Germinate at 15°C (59°F), though this method is slower.
