History
Cultivated since ancient times in North Asia, the Siberian crabapple tree has long been appreciated for its great hardiness and its role as a support in the multiplication of fruit tree varieties. Used both for its fruits, often acidic and intended for processing, and as a rootstock in orchards, it has contributed to the development of apple cultivation in regions with harsh winters.
OriginS
Native to the cold areas of Asia (Siberia, northern China and Korea), Malus baccata is naturally adapted to extreme climates. Its genetic characteristics give it a remarkable tolerance to frosts and severe winters, making it a wise choice for temperate regions where temperatures drop very low.
Orchard Management
  • In orchards, the Siberian crabapple tree must be planted in a sunny location and sheltered from strong winds to maximize production.
    • Deep, rich and well-drained soil is essential to avoid waterlogging and promote good rooting.
    • The recommended spacing is generally between 5 and 7 metres, to ensure good aeration and facilitate cultivation and harvesting.
Physiology
  • Malus baccata is a deciduous tree that has moderate growth and good adaptability to extreme climatic conditions.
It reaches an average height of 4 to 8 metres, with often spreading branches.
Its foliage, of modest size, takes on beautiful autumn hues, bringing an ornamental appeal to orchards.
Flowering, discreet and light, precedes the formation of characteristic small fruits.
Tree Management
  • Individual management of the Siberian crabapple is based on regular pruning carried out in winter to:
Promote the removal of dead wood and the thinning of interior branches, in order to obtain an airy canopy.
Form the tree into a vase or goblet, which simplifies harvesting and allows better light penetration.
Although the species is often selffertile, careful management can optimize the productivity and quality of the branches.
Fruit Quality
The fruits of the Siberian crabapple tree are small in size and have a strong tart taste, which makes them less suitable for direct consumption but ideal for processing.
• They are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
• Their characteristic flavour, often used to make jams, compotes and juices, brings a tangy note that goes well in the kitchen.
Plant Protection
  • Extremely hardy, Malus baccata is resistant to cold climates, but it is still necessary to:
    • Watch for diseases such as leaf spot or fire blight, especially when there is excess moisture.
    • Adopt good orchard hygiene by removing dead leaves and damaged fruit, in order to limit the spread of pathogens.
    • Favor preventive biological treatments if necessary, while avoiding excessive watering that could weaken the tree.
Harvest
  • Fruit maturity is generally in late summer to early autumn:
Harvesting is done manually to avoid damaging these small apples, which are often delicate and sensitive to crushing.
Fruit should be picked as soon as it becomes tender and has its characteristic colour, before its acidity increases.
Although they are not eaten fresh, they are ideal for the preparation of jams or juices, which take advantage of their particular aromatic profile.
